Final Photographs

These are the photographs that I have chosen for the final piece. In the contact sheets on my previous post I noticed that the majority of my photographs were straight forward portraits really and that wasn't what I wanted, so I looked through the selection I had and chose the ones I have taken that were most like Sara Helena Bergers photographs but not exactly the same. These were also my favorites.

For the most part I had no problem with taking these photographs apart I didn't take into account what the weather was like, so when I saw it was windy it was a bit of a shock but it turned out helping with the look I wanted. I would have preferred it to have been a bit sumner but I couldn't control that. I should really have done a second shoot but I and the model didn't have time also it was raining quite a lot and that wouldn't have helped.

Shoot One

For my first shoot my model and I went to a local park, I also chose what she wore being all black with white shoes and a denim jacket. To me this is quite fashionable and has a very 50's feel to it. I got her to do a few poses but they all felt too faked. Some photos in these contact sheets have made it to my final selection of photographs. It was a very cold a dreary day which I think really added to the shoot, making my models hair blow around and be uncontrollable, also the grey sky adds to the awkward dark positions the model ended up in. I was unable to do a second shoot but I was happy with a selection of my photographs, I also have all the same photos developed which I will be using to present them.

Exhibition Posters

I have chosen these two posters that are very different in many aspects, and they also had different strong and weak points. This first one is very dark and bod which stands out really well. It gives you all the information you need in quite big whit writing over the top of a photograph. I like this because with the very dark background the white writing sands out and only gives you the information you really need leaving you thinking what the exhibition will be like. The dark image for the background shows what the exhibition might be like so that might get a certain audience but you can't be sure unless you go which is very intriguing. I like how there also isn't anything that takes away from the information given there are now bright colors of odd objects that put you off or takes your attention away from the main subject. The image for the background is really good because it almost had a leading line with the stairs that leads you to the time, dat and admission fees for the exhibition and is also an interesting image. I think this photography was used because you it makes you want to know what the exhibition is about.  I like how with the text all the important information like time / date / location are in bold, the title is also big to create a bigger impact and make the poster stand out.

This poster is completely different to the first, as it it very colorful and simple. I really like this because I feel like it stands out more and is almost more interesting, the colors catch your eye and it also doesn't give anything away about the exhibition. This could also be a downfall because you don't have any indicator as to what the exhibition and that could put people off from going although it could also intrigue some people. Illustration has been used this is good because it doesn't give anything away about the exhibition it almost makes it a surprise. The fonts that are used are really nice because they are quite dainty but that isn't very good when it comes to trying to read the information at the bottom.

My Poster Examples

This is the main poster that I really like, the picture isn't in focus so you're almost drawn to the information

Generating Ideas - Landscape

Landscape photography involves little to no human appearances and is usually just locations, nature or urban landscapes. Urban photography is all mainly man made objects and buildings this kind of photography is less considered landscape photography because it is mainly nature, forests, trees, mountains, fields etc. When photographing landscapes there are a lot of things you need to consider, weather, location and time of day, also you'll need to have a tripod to keep the camera completely still. Type of lens is also important whether you want a wide lens to capture more of the landscape to any others.

Michael Wolf

I really like Wolfs work as some of it is completely random and really different, a lot of his work isn't photographed by him it's screenshots of funny and interesting things he has found on google maps. His series of photographs are all very different and definitely not what you see everyday, it's a lot of stuff that goes unseen by most people. He made about 6 different series of people like this, in events like falling off bikes, people falling over and people sticking up their middle fingers. It challenges the perspectives because it's using location and by using google maps and searching the landscapes shown for interesting photographs.

Wolf also took photographs like this more like urban landscapes. I really like these photographs because they are quite different, in that it's just the windows of the buildings not the actual height and structure of them. I also like how in this one you can see the reflection of other buildings it think it's really beautiful. I think this challenges the perspectives of landscape photography because it isn't a normal location and it's mainly reflections and windows.

I took this panorama but I didn't do it with any settings or a phone, I had my camera set on a wall and inched my way across at the same height getting photos of the whole amphitheater. I then used photoshop to merge them all to gather and straightened the image so it was curved and odd to the eye. If I was going to use this for my final project I maybe wouldn't get rid of the curve or even curve it more to make it almost look like an illusion.

Generating Idea - Still Life

Harold Edgerton

Still life is mainly a product things that don't move and used for advertising.
This challenges the perspectives of still life because it isn't just a product just sat there doing nothing it also has something going on. It adds more to the photograph and makes it more interesting. This also adds movement to he photograph which contradicts the fact it's still life. A normal still life photograph would involve an object(s) being placed in a way that makes them look more appealing with high key lighting to make it look more clean or the opposite way depending on the object, this makes more people want the product which is why still life is great for avertisng. Edgerton challenges this by not only creating movemen but a lot of shadowing is visable making t look less appealing. This is also considered more art than photography because you are posing the photograph and creating somethingdifferent and more intersting.

David Lachapelle

I really like some things about this photograph like it's all very vibrant colours and that with the sentiment of wanting someone to get better that adds to it. I don't like some aspects of this like the background, I feel like it takes away from the rest of the photograph. I like the way there's a bit of juxtaposition with the food as well as the balloons and there's a random little plane at the bottom right hand corner, this challenges the idea of a normal still life photograph. Also the American flag being on fire makes you think what the actual meaning of the photograph is.

I took this photograph in the studio and I do really like it but it doesn't challenge what still life photography is. I like how it is very clean and could advertise the jewelry real well, I wasn't able to think of many ways to challenge these perspectives with the facilities I had without having to spending a lot of money.

Project Plan

In this Brief we have to challenge the rules and perspectives of, portraits, still life or landscape photography. I will need to do some research on some photographers that also challenge normal forms of photography. I think I will aim to do portraiture which I am a bit more comfortable with doing, I will try and get some different angles and maybe not even get a face in the photograph, because that is still a portrait. I think it would be a bit more difficult to get something a lot more different with landscape because you can't control it, there are only so many things that you can do to make it any different from other landscape photographs. I also think still life could be difficult because there are so many things you can photograph and in a lot of different ways that it could end up being boring or too confusing.

I plan to have my model in a field so there is almost a landscape background, using Sanna Berger as my influence I will be taking awkward pictures of my model. I will only be photographing part of her body, also she will be in all black to make it look I may also have my model have

Generating Ideas - Portraiture

We were asked to go out and see what portraits we could achieve that were unconventional and different. We needed to make sure they were fresh, unique and that challenged normal portraiture. We used a lot of different techniques like shadows and reflections or even just body parts because they all count as portraits.
I happened to choose catching people off guard while they were evaluating something they have just done like listening to their music and looking at a photograph. I think this captures how they react to the photograph and that it shows them as natural as possible doing something they like to do.

I like this photograph because it wouldn't be considered 'proffesional', but then you also have a very professional aspect of the photograph with the camera on a tripod in the corner. Almost creating some juxtaposition.
With this photograph I like how I was able to get the colours to come out very bright but not overexposed, also you can see that they are analysing a photo they have just taken. I think this challenges normal portraits in that we can't see / hear what they're analysing it's almost a mystery.
I like this because I took it while he was listening to some music he had just recorded  and seeing if he liked it or had to do it again.
